Located at Anglická 336/21, where Hezky Česky once stood, GRØN Bistro is a newly opened establishment with a name that Danish visitors may find intriguing. “GRØN” translates to “green” and also happens to be the branding for one of Denmark’s most consumed pilsners—GRØN Tuborg. While the logo of Bistro GRØN bears a striking resemblance to Tuborg’s branding, let’s agree to keep that observation under wraps!

Famous last words about beer (for now): Bistro GRØN offers Corona and Birell, which doesn’t inspire much excitement for beer aficionados. That said, the food menu—a delightful breakfast selection and an all-day offering—makes up for the lack of noteworthy brews. The menu is concise, reasonably priced, and caters well to vegetarians and those avoiding gluten. There’s also a commitment to organic produce and animal welfare.

The bistro is in its soft-opening phase, having just launched earlier this week. The interior is bright and modern, blending raw elements with tastefully Scandinavian-style furnishings, which are, in fact, Spanish-made as I discovered. The concrete flooring and partially exposed brick walls lend a chic, New York loft-style vibe. On a Friday evening, the place was rather quiet – understandable given it had only opened three days prior.

Menu Highlights

The menu is divided into three sections: Shared Plates (such as hummus and cheeses), Mix & Match (mainly grilled mains with sides), and Green Garden Plates (primarily salads). Desserts are also available.

From the Mix & Match section, I opted for the Piri Piri Farm Chicken—deboned free-range chicken thighs marinated in piri piri sauce, accompanied by pineapple salsa and coriander (CZK 195). For sides, I chose Truffle Farm Potatoes (grilled potatoes with truffle mayonnaise, chives, and hazelnuts) and Miso Brussels Sprouts (caramelised sprouts with miso, mirin, rice vinegar, and ginger) at CZK 68 each. To accompany the meal, I ordered a glass of organic Primitivo (CZK 130 for 150 ml) and half a litre of sparkling water with magnesium (CZK 48)—the magnesium was an unnecessary addition, if you ask me.

When the food arrived, the generous portion size surprised me. In hindsight, one side dish would have sufficed, as the plate also came with a mixed green salad, toasted bread, and a spicy pepper spread – perhaps ajvar, or maybe GRØN’s homemade piri piri sauce.

The presentation was colourful and visually appealing, and the flavours did not disappoint. The chicken was tender, juicy, and well-seasoned – mildly spicy but not overwhelming. The pineapple salsa complemented the meat, while the pepper spread added depth to the dish. The potatoes were small and perfectly cooked, though the advertised truffle mayonnaise was neither visible nor discernible. From previous restaurant experiences here in Prague, I’m beginning to think I’m cursed when it comes to truffles that can actually be tasted in the food.

Similarly, the miso marinade on the Brussels sprouts was subtle, but the sprouts themselves were a revelation – grilled to perfection and far removed from the bitter memories of over-boiled childhood versions.

Unexpectedly, the green salad stole the show among the accompaniments. Fresh, crisp, and delicious, though I would have loved a honey-Dijon mustard vinaigrette to elevate it further. Nonetheless, everything on the plate was well-prepared, and I enjoyed every bite – so much so that even the server commented on my clean plate!

The wine was decent but seemed slightly overpriced.

Overall Impression

I was thoroughly impressed by the quality and presentation of the food. With a main course and one side priced at CZK 263, GRØN Bistro offers fantastic value for money – leaning towards downright affordable, given the inclusion of extras like salad, bread, and sauce.

I will certainly return if the bistro maintains its current pricing and quality standards. It’s a great spot for a casual evening out with friends, particularly mixed groups where dietary needs vary.

A couple of suggestions: I’d love to see the Corona replaced with a flavourful local beer and the Birell substituted with a non-alcoholic option that actually tastes like beer rather than watered-down rye bread. The bistro could also benefit from extending its opening hours beyond 8 p.m.

Do check out their breakfast menu too – I haven’t had the chance to explore it yet.
